The first application session was pretty funny. I went to Frances' (sister) and Arnie's (her partner) house and brought with me a bunch of cd's, exacto knives, straight edges and of course silicone.
We began by scoring the cd's using the straight edge and going across the middle hole. One score was not enough, but multiple scores were hard to exactly superimpose. Needless to say we fractured many cd's, but we managed to cut about 12-15 into quarters. Arnie and I carried these to the front of the house and began with the hood. He was putting a blob of silicone on each one, and I began putting them on. Now silicone has a bit of a stringy effect, and we did manage to get silicone pretty much everywhere.
However once we got about three rows done on the hood, we realized that this was going to look really cool! I was inpsired!
It was Henry who picked up the cutting project and figured out the easy effective way to cut the cd's that we still use today. Using a VERY sharp blade, you start from the center of the cd and pushing down hard, cut outwards with a rapid swipe. Repeat in all directions that you wish to cut. It is critical that you do this on a piece of scrap wood or something, because otherwise you will ruin any surface you are working on. Then...... SNAP! Most cd's will break cleanly along your score line.
It can take a while, but if you can get a sort of assembly line going it's not so bad, one person cutting, the other snapping.
